Summer’s Winding Down, But Island Events are Ramping Up
It may not seem like it right now, but summer is almost in the rear view mirror. It’s true, technically the summer solstice takes place on September 22, but who says we have to abide by some old predetermined calendar? It’s still warm, the sun is still out, the ferry’s engines are still humming and we’re going to take full advantage!
So before we officially say goodbye to the third season and fall into the next one, let’s take a look at all of the upcoming Put-in-Bay events so we can ease into this seasonal transition.
September 24 — Halfway to St. Patty’s Day: Break out your finest greens and head over to Put-in-Bay for a 2pm parade featuring Irish Bagpipers & Snare Drum Band, all while feasting on Irish inspired food and drinks. Looking to roll in the parade with a decorated golf cart? Hooligan’s Irish Pub has you covered — Just meet behind their building from noon to 1:45pm.
September 26 – October 1 — Middle Bass Island Bird Banding: Try and say that three times fast. Middle Bass Island Bird Banding…Middle Bass Island Bird…just kidding. In all seriousness, volunteers are needed to help band birds at Middle Bass Island. It’s a wonderfully unique experience and a great way to help out the Lake Erie Islands Conservancy. For more information please visit their website here.
October 1 — Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics: How do you support Special Olympics Ohio and have a ton of island fun at the same time? Participate in the 12th Annual Ohio LETR Poker Walk of course! This year the theme is 80’s, so be sure to sport your best old school, Weird Science duds. Event registration is only $30 and check in starts at 11:00 am at the Islander Inn.
October 1 — Island Wine Festival: Looks like October 1st is going to be a busy day at the Bay! The increasingly popular Put-in-Bay Island Wine Festival is back and better than ever with more than 250 imported and domestic wines — Of course the island will be well represented with excellent wine from Put-in-Bay Winery and the legendary 128 year old Heineman’s (Check out their brand new website here). Admission is just $6 and includes a souvenir wine glass, which we’re guessing you’re going to put to good use. Sample tickets are $1 each, with most samples ranging from $1 – $4. A silent auction benefitting the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society will also take place. Trust us when we say, it’s going to be a grape time.
October 8 – October 9 — Oktoberfest Weekend: The forecast for this particular weekend looks bright…and German. Live polka and German music will echo across South Bass Island for this year’s annual Island Oktoberfest on Put-in-Bay. As always, you can enjoy a spread fit for even the hardiest of Germans. Many of the local restaurants will be showcasing specialties such as spatzel, cabbage rolls, German potato salad, sauerbraten, wiener schnitzel, potato pancakes, apple dumplings and German chocolate cake. And of course, German beer and wine provided by local favorite, Heineman’s Winery. Hours for the celebration are 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Saturday and noon – 5 p.m. on Sunday. Remember to buy a 2-day pass to receive a discount.
