Perry’s Monument Opens
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial will reopen Saturday, May 18, at 10 am to celebrate its 104th year in operation. The 352-foot tall structure is the world’s largest Doric column and is made of pink granite from Milford, MA. The column has a wood base structure with an outer concrete core. Park Rangers in 1812 period military uniforms will fire a musket salute after the morning flag raising ceremony.
The 25-acre Park, Memorial Column and Visitor Center is open from 10 am to 6 pm daily through September 8. Hours are 10 am to 5 pm September 9 through September 30, and weekends in October (Friday through Monday) until October 21.
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial was established to honor those who fought and died in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and to celebrate the long-lasting peace between the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. The Memorial, a Doric column, rising 352 feet over Lake Erie is situated 5 miles from the longest undefended border in the world.
