Top 5 Reasons Why Fall is the Perfect Time for an Escape to Put-in-Bay

The end of summer is a peculiar thing.  Those favoring eternal sunshine and an endless supply of Banana Boat may be languishing a bit while the pumpkin patch frequenting folks relish in the changing of seasons, welcome the thought of wearing flannel and seeing your breath in the morning.  Whichever way you lean however, Put-in-Bay in all of it’s warm weather glory, is also quite inviting when the leaves begin to turn.
Leaves1. Fall Foliage – Some might argue that New England has the best hue palette when it comes to deciduous trees, but one could present an argument that Ohio, especially along the shores of Lake Erie, puts up a fight.  Watching the sun drop into the lake canvas behind blazing oranges and searing reds from the gunnels of the Miller Ferry is something that even the most seasoned leaf peeper will appreciate.
2. Miller Boat Line 5k and 1 Mile Family Fun Walk – Not many people can say that they’ve participated in an island race, let alone a Put-in-Bay island race.  Perfect for keeping the hamster wheel going as we move into a slower time of year,  the scenic course, much of it winding along the island shoreline, is considered to be one of the most beautiful runs in Ohio.
3. Relaxation – While there’s certainly something to be said for laying in the sun and soaking up some vitamin D when it’s 85 degrees, the cooler, crisp air that is synonymous with Fall has a calming affect on island locals and visitors alike.  Forget about the hustle and bustle of summer for a minute and take a moment to reflect on the year gone by.  Now whether you choose to do that at the Goat or the Roundhouse, the choice is completely up to you.002a
4. Island Wine Festival – Coincidentally, these seasons that we’re rambling about are precisely the reason why grapes grow so uninhibited and sweet in this region.  This years Island Wine Festival will be October 4, 2014 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Put-in-Bay Winery, will feature wine representatives from across the U.S. and boast more than 400 types of wine to sample.  That’s a lot of wine.  Of course local wines from Heineman’s Winery and the Put-in-Bay Winery will be on hand as well.
5. Oktoberfest – Admit it, wiener schnitzel is just fun to say.  Okay okay, it’s unbelievably tasty as well.  Live polka and German music will echo through DeRivera Park through October 11-12 providing that unmistakable mark of a island Oktoberfest celebration. Combine that with locally made spatzel, cabbage rolls, German potato salad, sauerbraten, potato pancakes, apple dumplings and German chocolate cake.  Well that’s a meal for even the hardiest of island goers. GermanKids1
