This State Has Legs…Ohio Wine By the Numbers

It’s that time of the year.  The 8th Annual Island Wine Festival will be held Saturday, October 5th, at Put-in-Bay.  Wine connoisseurs and representatives from wineries across the country will be on hand to sample the best of what each winery has to offer.

Our locally celebrated grape harvester, Put-in-Bay Winery, will be serving up their best along with several other Ohio wineries, plus domestics and imports.  So come out, support, taste and most of all, relax on island time.

Wine2Just for fun though, let’s take a look at Ohio wine by the numbers.  Because secretly, and don’t tell anyone, we like it the best.

  • 42,000N, 81,200W – latitude and longitude of Lake Erie
  • 1823 – the year Ohio started producing wine
  • 1825 – the year the first Catawba grapes were grown
  • 216 – the number of wineries currently in operation in Ohio
  • 5 – designated American Viticultural Areas located in the state (Lake Erie being one)
  • 2,236,800 – acres of land in Lake Erie’s wine growing region
