Miller Ferry’s Memorial Day Walkthrough at Put-in-Bay
An example of what a typical Memorial Weekend day could look like once you arrive via the Miller Ferry.
7:45 am: A bit early? Maybe, but it’s vacation and breakfast tastes better on an island. Grab a roundtrip ticket on the Miller Ferry and hop on the 8:00 am boat.
8:15 am: Get your camera out, take some really cool photos of Lake Erie and tweet them at @MillerBoatLine. We love your photos.
8:22 am: Arrive on Put-in-Bay, catch a taxi into town, send aforementioned photos to your friends to make them jealous. Bonus points if you get them out of bed.
8:45 am: Find your way to Pasquale’s Cafe for breakfast and order the Hot Mess – enough said.
10:00 am: Familiarize yourself with nature’s splendor by strolling through DeRivera Park and continuing along the waterfront to Oak Point State Park. BayView Gifts is a good halfway point to stop, get your bearings and grab a refreshment. And post more photos to Facebook.
11:30 am: Head out to Perry’s Monument International Peace Memorial, see the world from 352 feet up and educate yourself on U.S. history. At only $3/per person for adults and free entry for children under 15, it’s a no brainer. Commodore Perry would be proud. Insider note: Try and be the first person to the top with May 25th being the opening day for the season.
1:00 pm: It’s lunch time and that means heading out to The Goat for the best perch tacos you’ve ever had. Seriously, the best. Ask anyone who works on the island and they’ll tell you the same – also ask them how to get there.
3:00 pm: Since you’re out in that neck of the island, stop into Heineman’s Winery for a cheese plate and some Pink Catawba wine. Those in the know flock to the back garden area when the weather is nice. You are now in the know.
4:30 pm: Cross the street, looking both ways of course and head into The Butterfly House. With secret garden passageways, over 50 types of exotic butterflies, spelunking in Perry’s Cave and mini-golfing the War of 18 Holes, this place will bring out the kid in you.
6:00 pm: At Put-in-Bay, gorgeous waterfront and dinner go hand-in-hand. Perhaps the best spot to experience both is at The Keys. Just make sure you try the conch fritters.
7:30 pm: A somewhat sad time of the day, you’ve got to begin the trek home. Although you could get happy again by finding some very affordable lodging here. No worries if you can’t though, sunsets are the best when you’re floating back on the Miller Ferry – just another photo opportunity to make your friends jealous.
