PUT-IN-BAY, OHIO –PLANTING PEACE AT PERRYS VICTORY AND INTERNATIONAL PEACE MEMORIAL
Incollaboration with the Island Tradition of celebrating the Canadianholiday of Queen Victoria Day Perry’s Victory and International PeaceMemorial will hold their “Planting the Seeds of Peace,” event onSaturday May 19th. This is an annual event held at Perry’s Victory thatmarks the opening of the summer season as we join the island communityin the long held tradition of observing Queen Victoria Day throughplanting, beautifying, and preparing for the upcoming tourist season andevents. We reserve this special day for planting our Peace Gardenwhich welcomes visitors and stands as a commemoration of thelong-lasting peace between Canada, Great Britain, and the United States.
Wewelcome visitors, neighbors and friends to share this special day withus by joining us in our planting activities as well as partaking in somefun educational activities and an ice cream social! Perry’s Victorybegan holding their peace garden planting on Queen Victoria Weekend as away to bring their mission of commemorating peace to life. Superintendent Blanca Alvarez Stransky explains “Gardens are synonymouswith peace and transcend all language barriers. The planting of apeace garden at the Memorial is the perfect method for expressing thepark’s dual mission—commemorating the War of 1812 and honoring thelong-lasting peace between countries”.
Areagardeners young and old are invited to help plant the park’s peacegardens on the corner of Toledo and Bay View Avenues and the corner ofHartford and Bay View Avenues. Planting starts at 10 a.m., gloves andtrowels will be provided. Children’s activities also begin at 10 a.m.and run throughout the day until 3 p.m. Children’s activities willinclude seed cartridge rolling, and compostable flower pot decoration.Ice cream will be served to celebrate the planting and the beginning of anew season of events and programs at the memorial. Ice cream will beserved at 12 noon.
