PERRY’S VICTORY TO HOLD CELEBRATION COMMEMORATING THE 226TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF OLIVER HAZARD PERRY

PUT IN BAY, OH. — Lets party like it’s 1812! Join us at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial on August 18 and 19 for a celebration in honor of an American hero.  Commodore Perry, commander of American naval forces in the Battle of Lake Erie, demonstrated unparalleled strength of character and bravery worthy of remembrance. In a time of great adversity Perry’s exceptional leadership allowed American troops to claim triumph over the British in one of the most significant navel victories in U.S. history.

Come to Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial to learn more about this incredible historic figure through a special tour of his life as presented by a costumed Perry interpreter. This tour will take the visitor through the Perry’s Victory grounds and through time stopping in several War of 1812 period stations including a historic cooking demonstration, cannon demonstration, medical tent, and black powder musket demonstration. The tour will include stories of the life of Perry, his crew mates and civilians of the time period. The Perry tour will begin every hour on the hour between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Perry’s Victory Visitor Center back porch.

Celebratory events will include fun and educational activities for adults and children alike. Everyone is encouraged to pull out their best historic threads to participate in the event and compete in our Historic Costume Contest on Saturday! There will be prizes for the most historically accurate and most creative costumes for both adults and children. In addition to our costume contest guests can also compete for a prize in our Perry lookalike Contest! Judging for both contests will occur at 4:30 p.m. at the visitor center. On Saturday Children can participate in the building of our cardboard replica fleet from 11a.m.- 12noon and from 1-2 p.m. and get their very own sailors temporary tattoos. On Sunday our historic tour will include special guest Carol Starre-Kmiecik who will treat visitors to her Dolly Madison interpretation.  Carol will give a formal Dolly Madison Performance in the theater from 2:30-3:15 p.m. Sunday visitors can also participate in our special “Join Perry’s Army Program” for kids and the young at heart 4-5 p.m. To top of your experience you are also invited to join us for birthday cake at noon on both Saturday and Sunday!
