U.S. Brig Niagara Teacher Workshop
Area Teachers Invited for Sail Aboard Historic Ship
Put-in-Bay, Ohio (August 6, 2009)............
Eighth grade teachers in Lucas, Huron, Erie, Ottawa, Lorain and Cuyahoga counties are invited to sail aboard the U.S. Brig Niagara on Thursday, August 20, as part of an interdisciplinary project for students. The program is free and offered on a first come basis.
“We are working on developing a curriculum for eighth grade students using the Brig Niagara as a teaching tool,” said Doraine Toms, Coordinator of the Lake Erie Educational Program. “The Niagara can be used for a variety of disciplines including math, science, history, English, art and physical education.”
Toms said any eighth grade teacher in the five counties is eligible to participate. Registration deadline is August 15 and space is filling up quickly.
The Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial and the Brig Niagara are working on an educational program that involves classroom instruction and field experience to teach skills in accordance with the Ohio proficiency standards.
For more information or to register for the teachers’ workshop, phone the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau at 419-285-2213 or 419-285-2832.
