Put-in-Bay Offers an Island Vacation in the Midwest

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio (June, 2008) – From kayaking to Perry’s International Peace Memorial, Put-in-Bay has plenty of attractions for visitors dreaming of an affordable island vacation this summer.

“Put-in-Bay offers an inexpensive island vacation right in the heart of the Midwest,” said Julene Market, marketing manager, Miller Boat Line. “Miller Ferry offers free parking so families can leave their car on the mainland along with their worries about rising gas prices.”

Below is a sampling of Put-in-Bay’s new and most notable attractions.

Family Fun

Tailfins Amusement Park – Tailfins features Ohio’s first-ever outdoor electric powered go-kart track and a Brunswick Virtual Bowling Alley. Plenty of water fun is available with bumper boats and water wars.

Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center – Perry’s visitors will enjoy The Butterfly House, a 4,000-square-foot indoor garden with a variety of butterflies, and the 20-minute narrated tour of Perry’s Cave. The center also offers gemstone mining at a real mining sluice and features Fort AMAZE’n, a giant wooden wall maze.

Historical

Perry’s International Peace Memorial – Head to the top of the memorial for a panoramic view of Lake Erie. The monument is the only peace memorial within the National Parks Service and commemorates Perry’s defeat of the British during The Battle of Lake Erie in 1813. Today, the monument symbolizes lasting peace between the United States and Canada. Visitors can see the free 20-minute presentation, educational displays and Ohio’s oldest statue of Commodore Perry.

Doller House & Museum – New in 2008, the Doller House museum showcases the past 100 years of island life at the former Put-in-Bay Mayor Valentine Doller’s historic 1897 home. The last Put-in-Bay ice house and Ironclad vessel can be seen here.

Sports

Kayak the Bay – Kayakers can choose from single or double sit-on-top or sit-in kayaks to take a leisurely trip around the bay or an exciting trip around the island. Tubes and floats can also be rented.

Parasailing – Adventurous vacationers can get a bird’s eye view of South Bass Island while parasailing in Put-in-Bay’s downtown harbor.

Pampering

Chocolate Café – Café guests can tour the facility, spoil themselves with signature chocolates, indulge in rich coffees, and learn the history of chocolate making.

Heineman Winery & Crystal Cave – Heineman's Winery on South Bass Island celebrates its 120th year in 2008. This fully operational winery features a narrated tour and Crystal Cave, home of the world’s largest geode.

Isola Day Spa - Named with the Italian word for island, Isola is a full-service day spa committed to pampering the mind, body and spirit. A relaxing massage, manicure or a balancing facial lets customers leave their worries on the mainland to enjoy a true island vacation. Special packages with Miller Ferry transportation are available.
