Do You Want to see a 1,237-Pound Pumpkin?

Fresh off its debut in Hamilton, Ohio for the Pumpkin and Art Festival, Richard Warren’s behemoth gourd will make the trip aboard the Miller Ferry back home to Put-in-Bay for the island’s annual Oktoberfest in DeRivera Park.

Perhaps one of the weirdest items ever transported on the ferry, Warren says the obscenely large pumpkin is the biggest ever grown on an island.  Riding shotgun across the western basin of Lake Erie will be the mammoth’s little brother, a mere 500-pounder.

While the Volkswagen Beetle sized pumpkin will certainly draw the most attention at this year’s German-style celebration, there’s much fun to be had elsewhere as well.

Live polka and German music will echo through DeRivera Park through October 11-12 providing that unmistakable mark of a island Oktoberfest celebration.  Various local restaurants will be on hand serving spatzel, wiener schnitzel, cabbage rolls, German potato salad, sauerbraten, potato pancakes, apple dumplings and German chocolate cake.

Wandering island adventurers will also be rewarded by hopping from establishment to establishment, where many deploy some sort of German themed fun of their own.  Now whether that’s mixing German and Irish at Hooligan’s or watching a fall sunset dip behind Oak Point at Topsy Turvy’s, the choice is completely up to you.
